Design Within Reach opens in San Francisco, Schumacher unveils a Charlotte boutique, and more

Spring is around the corner, and many brands are starting the season with new locations and renovations. In our March roundup, BOH has gathered all the showroom news to have on your radar this month.

Showroom Spotlight

More than 20 years ago, Design Within Reach began its brick-and-mortar journey in San Francisco with the debut of a small studio in the heart of the Financial District. In the years since, plenty has changed for the company—it has joined the MillerKnoll family of brands, and now operates a fleet of stores across the U.S. and Mexico. With its newest studio—based in the city’s burgeoning Potrero Hill design district—the company is paying homage to where it all began.

“Over the past few years, we have continued to evolve the in-person experience for our customers,” says Debbie Propst, president of global retail for MillerKnoll. “As San Francisco is the birthplace of DWR, this new location is especially meaningful, and we’re excited to open our doors to the local community.”

Located within a gut-renovated 15,000-square-foot warehouse dating back to the 1920s, the studio retains much of the architectural framework characteristic of the neighborhood, including the original timber and skylights. It also features two first-time concepts: The Gallery and the Case Study Apartment. Both will house rotating temporary exhibits: The Gallery currently displays a collaboration with Vitra celebrating the work of French architect Jean Prouvé; in the Case Study Apartment, a partnership with Swiss design and manufacturing brand USM presents scenes depicting the life of a futuristic Beat poet.

That last detail, along with countless others scattered throughout the store, was carefully curated to highlight the city’s rich cultural history—part of a strategy conceived by Omar Nobil, vice president of product design and brand creative for Design Within Reach.

“Walking through this studio is meant to feel like reading a love letter to San Francisco,” says Nobil. The ethos extends to details both small (such as the store’s playlist, which features songs by local progressive independent musicians) and large (including a listening room vignette complete with Togo sofas and a record player inspired by an iconic photo of Steve Jobs).

The location represents DWR’s second outpost in San Francisco, where Propst hopes to create a deeper foothold for the brand. With new exhibition spaces, complimentary design consultations and educational features, the message to prospective buyers and design enthusiasts alike is clear: Stop in and stay awhile. 1400 17th St., San Francisco
